The third Beatitude, which announces that the ‘meek are blessed’, exemplifies the upside-down world of Jesus. It is fair to say that our culture does not believe that the meek are blessed and certainly not that they will inherit the earth. Even in the church (as Farrell writes) “No one really wants the last place; no one scrambles to get it. No one wants the job no one else chooses.” Yet it is in meekness (not the same thing as timidity) that Jesus announces and pursues his ministry of bringing in the kingdom of God.
