The story of the prophet Elijah fleeing from the wrath of Queen Jezebel is a telling one which is worthy of our consideration. It speaks of a mighty prophet of God filled with fear, anger and bitterness, who feels alone, misunderstood and unappreciated by everyone in the nation of Israel (and maybe God as well)! Compassionately our God reaches out to Elijah through his angels providing food and drink to restore his health and spirits.
Indeed, God provides bread from heaven – both physical bread for his body and spiritual bread for his soul. What Elijah is to learn is that he needs to stay close to God, listen for his voice, and remain active in the purposes that God has ordained for his life. Similarly we must keep feeding on God and Jesus as our energizing soul food through all the ups and downs of our own life journeys.
